OnDemand Hosted Services >
The MetaCarta NewsMap service is a hosted map mashup / extension that lets publishers dynamically display maps that show the places mentioned in their news stories.
The NewsMap service processes the text of stories using our proprietary geoparsing and geotagging technology to extract the geographic places mentioned in them, and resolves them to their respective latitude and longitude coordinates. The places are then represented through the mashup application as an overlay of markers on virtually any digital map such as those from Google®, Yahoo!®, and Microsoft®.
NewsMap can be used to display all of a day's news or stories from one or more categories of stories. Users can access more information about each story by simply placing their cursor over one of the map markers, which causes a text balloon to appear. This text balloon contains more information about the story and a link to its full text. Since the underlying map is fully interactive, users can easily pan or zoom the map to find areas of interest and associated stories.
A MetaCarta NewsMap is a great way to present users with a view of “where the news is happening”.
