From "MetaCarta Unlocks Geographic Content in a Global Energy Firm" January 2007
Geographic information is a vital component of energy exploration. Drilling in the wrong location can cost an energy company hundreds of millions of dollars while drilling in the right place can lead to a multibillion-dollar gusher. It’s critical to look at all the information that is available to make informed decision and that information is usually stored in many places, in many formats, and in many applications. Yet geography is often an important facet for unifying access to both unstructured and structured content. End users within this global energy company needed an effective way to retrieve information within their corporate knowledge base, and to rapidly find content that was locked in more than fifty information silos. With its geospatial information retrieval solution, MetaCarta provided unified access to these silos for the petroleum engineers, geologists, and other specialists who needed to conduct research, analyze problems, and make decisions.

From "Mapping the News" March 2008
"What separates MetaCarta's service is that it combines crisp data visualization with the ability to search by topic and location..., allowing fairly deep personalization."
From "Update on Emerging Technologies" August 2005
"MetaCarta offers an alternative to the hand-coded standards-based approach used by Yahoo, Google, and others, in that the system can learn new location information for itself and can pull information from free text without exact keyword matches. For example, the question "Where have there been pipeline explosions?" would search a document base and use the results to generate a map of locations where explosions had occurred ("pipeline explosion" would be a straight forward keyword search, but the location information would match across many different types of description.) It can also use a body of text to answer questions such as "What happened in this location?"

From "Visual Search Future Mapped by MetaCarta" June 2007
"But the remarkable thing is not the application so much as the concept that textual ideas are made concrete in a graphical format, which can then be manipulated to fine tune the text search. Whether you imagine a huge multinational corporation managing teams by a combination of personnel files and office locations, or a physician working through evidence by manipulating an atlas of a body, perhaps along with dragging and dropping procedures or medications, the idea of using concrete, immediately understandable visual elements to move efficiently through text is immensely appealing and adds a dimension to the search experience which resembles gaming and fun. It’s hard to believe that the long-term future for many kinds of search won't be oriented towards such a technology."

From "Search Product and Company Update" August 2006
"MetaCarta's offerings inevitably evoke thoughts of Google Earth. Google Earth is great news for MetaCarta, because it has people from all sorts of industries and backgrounds thinking about the value of geographic information. Google Earth essentially performs market education for MetaCarta. What MetaCarta does, and Google Earth doesn't, is mine text for information that can be used to pinpoint the geographic locations of the key subjects of documents, and then provide the semantics that makes it possible to search for (and retrieve) 'landslides in Central America'."
